Where to Begin in 2026: A Beginner’s Guide to the DC Universe
DC’s universe spans 80+ years and some of the most iconic characters ever created. This hub cuts through the noise. Pick a character below, follow the 3-step path, and you’ll be reading your first DC comic tonight.
Before you dive in
DC Comics publishes thousands of titles. You don’t need to read them all. You don’t need to read most of them. You need to read the right ones first, in the right order, for your chosen character.
Every guide on this page follows the same 3-step entry system: Origin, Defining Story, Modern Entry. Start there. The complete beginner guide explains exactly how it works if you want the full picture before picking a character.
Not sure whether to start with Marvel or DC? Compare both universes here to help you decide which tone and style fits you better.

The reading path
How to Read DC as a Beginner
This order works regardless of which character you pick. Follow these steps and you’ll never feel lost.
01
Read the Origin
One standalone trade. DC’s “Year One” stories are designed exactly for this. No prior knowledge needed.
See the full beginner guide for why this step matters.
02
Read One Defining Story
The arc that made the character iconic. For Batman it’s
The Long Halloween. For Superman it’s All-Star Superman. These are self-contained and require nothing before them.
03
Pick a Modern Run (Optional)
Find a recent Vol. 1 and see if the current creative direction works for you. Stop after 2 to 3 volumes if it doesn’t connect. This is not required.
04
Events Only After You’re Invested
DC events like Crisis on Infinite Earths and Dark Nights: Metal reward readers who already know the characters. Read them after building investment, not before. Check the
DC Crisis events guide when you’re ready.

DC Events: What to Know
DC events are exciting but often require context. Here are the key ones, and when to read them.
Read after 10+ issues of experience
Crisis on Infinite Earths
DC’s most famous universe-reboot event. Rewarding once you know the characters involved, but dense for newcomers.
Read after investing in Batman
Dark Nights: Metal
Scott Snyder’s epic dark multiverse saga. Best enjoyed after reading Batman: Zero Year or Snyder’s New 52 run.
Beginner-accessible
Kingdom Come
An Elseworlds story set in a possible future. Largely self-contained and one of DC’s most acclaimed graphic novels.
Beginner-accessible
DC: The New Frontier
A standalone love letter to DC’s Silver Age. Perfect for new readers who want scope without continuity requirements.
What to skip as a beginner: The full Crisis continuity chain, tie-in issues, and anything labeled “Part 5 of 9” without reading parts 1 through 4 first.
Common questions
DC Comics: Beginner FAQs
What is the best DC comic for a complete beginner?
Batman: Year One is the most universally recommended starting point. It tells Batman’s origin with cinematic clarity and zero prior knowledge required.
See the full Batman reading order.
Do I need to read DC comics in order?
No. Each character guide on this site gives you a standalone starting point. DC’s best stories are largely self-contained. Focus on one character at a time and follow that character’s path.
What is the difference between DC’s New 52, Rebirth, and Dawn of DC?
New 52 (2011) rebooted DC’s universe with issue #1s across the line. Rebirth (2016) course-corrected with a lighter tone and restored some legacy elements. Dawn of DC (2023) is the current publishing era. For beginners, these are just entry points, not required reading.
Should I start with Marvel or DC Comics?
DC tends toward mythic, larger-than-life storytelling with iconic archetypes. Marvel tends toward more grounded character drama with humor. Neither is better.
Use this Marvel vs DC comparison to find which fits your taste.
What is a trade paperback and where do I buy DC TPBs?
A trade paperback (TPB) is a collected edition of 4 to 6 single issues. They’re the best format for new readers: affordable, complete, and available on Amazon, at local comic shops, and on DC Universe Infinite for digital reading.
